At the end of 2020 it was not a foregone conclusion that Eddie Betts would play on in 2021. But the fan favourite eventually signed on for another season in the navy blue.
Carlton’s Eddie Betts Conundrum
In the coming weeks Carlton may be faced with a similar conundrum on whether they should offer the three time All-Australian a further contract if Eddie Betts wants to continue his AFL journey for a remarkable 18th season.
Last week on AFL 360 the question was posed to the veteran if he would entertain the idea of another season.
Betts was non-committal but certainly seemed open to the suggestion while also stressing where his priorities currently lie.
“I am happy to play on as long as I can, at the moment helping my teammates, helping the Carlton football club get success and try to help develop these young forwards.”
Eddie Betts had a very quiet game against Geelong last weekend. But the small forward has been a solid contributor in recent weeks and is certainly playing better footy than last season.
Before the Cats clash Betts had kicked multiple goals in five of the previous six games.
The magic touch has certainly not deserted the mercurial forward who is still capable of the remarkable. And not surprisingly, Betts already has a nomination (round 8) for the Goal of The Year Award.
What the future holds
Performance in the remaining six games of the season may dictate if the Blues believe Betts still has something to offer at AFL level in what may also present a difficult list management decision.
If 2021 is to be the swansong for Eddie Betts, hopefully we get the opportunity to celebrate a wonderful career. But something tells me there might just be one more chapter left.
