A sold out crowd watched on in awe as local favourite Robert Whittaker delivered a first round TKO of Derek Brunson to strengthen his case for a title fight.
Whittaker’s performance was one of the standouts on a day that produced plenty of shocks.
Hometown favourite Jake Matthews didn’t fare so well going down in a split decision to underdog Andrew Holbrook.
Young gun Tyson Pedro announced himself as a force to be reckoned with in his UFC debut with an incredible submission of Khalil Rountree.
For Aussie UFC veteran Kyle Noke it was a tough night. Noke struggled for speed in his decision loss to ‘The Wolverine’ Omari Akhemedov. It would prove to be Noke’s last fight in the UFC with the Aussie legend announcing his retirement post fight.
Probably the most one sided win of the night came from Sydney’s Alex Volkanovski. He showed that it is time for people to take him seriously with his absolute demolition of Yusake Kasuya.
The biggest roar from the 13,000 strong Melbourne crowd was reserved for hometown hero Dan Kelly. After suffering a nasty cut early in the fight, Kelly was relentless with his hunting of Chris Camozzi who had previously said that fighting the Aussie would be like a vacation. But in the end Kelly was too good for him, winning by unanimous decision.
