The gruelling task of making the weight is something all MMA fighters are familiar with. But familiarity doesn’t make it any easier. Only this week we saw Khabib Nurmagomedov pull out of UFC 209 after being dramatically hospitalised two days before the event whilst trying to make his weight.
It is a situation Aussie UFC star Jake Matthews knows too well. Last November in Melbourne, Jake underwent a drastic cut to make it to 155 lbs and into the UFC Fight Night octagon. It proved to be too much. Matthews ended up struggling more than ever in the aftermath of his loss to Andrew Holbrook.
It was especially tough on Jake’s tight knit family and his dad Mick, who has been Jake’s coach since the early days of training in the 20 by 13 foot family backyard shed.
In this episode of Oz Warriors, Jake Matthews and his dad Mick open up about the gruelling effects of cutting weight. After undergoing two major operations to start the year, we join Jake at the beginning of his rehab journey.
We also get the lowdown on Jake’s UFC plans for 2017, including his highly anticipated move to Welterweight.
