My Life As… Michelle Jenneke

Almost two years ago now, Michelle Jenneke was one of the first athletes to be featured on BeyondTheGame.TV. My Life As… An Athlete – featuring Michelle Jenneke was and still is the most watched episode on this website. The main reason for this success is how fun and genuine Jenneke always appears on camera, which also helped build her massive profile in the media. Going into the Rio Olympics, only Usain Bolt was challenging her for exposure.

Before Rio

Leading up to Rio, the sponsors and the media couldn’t get enough of Michelle Jenneke. And with that came huge expectations from the public. But when Michelle hurt herself badly at training only two weeks before the games, she knew then that performing at her best in the Olympics wasn’t going to be an option. She did compete though and, in true Jenneke fashion, she smiled the whole way through and made the most of her first Olympic experience.

“It was an effort to get me out of that start line and get me to the finish line. So I was pretty proud of what I achieved out there,” said Jenneke.

After Rio

After the Rio Olympics, the media was pretty harsh on Michelle Jenneke using headlines like “Jiggling Jenneke bombs out” and “Jenneke falls flat”. Team Australia coach Craig Hilliard attacked her in the media as well saying that she wasn’t in the best shape. And lastly, Athletics Australia announced that she was basically making too much money and therefor was taken off the NAAS (National Athlete Support Structure) funding program.
