When Melbourne Storm first came to the NRL, many people thought it would be hard for them to attract fans in an AFL obsessed city. But one man has stood by the Storm since their opening game back in 1998 – Steve ‘Spider’ Martin.
#1 Melbourne Storm Fan Spider bleeds purple.
“I played league when I was a kid – it’s just in my blood. I find AFL a bit soft, I needed a hard sport.”
Just as famous as Spider is his cowbell. Spider and his custom-made cowbell are a huge hit with the fans at Storm games.
“It just electrifies the people around us – it’s really intense. I get goose bumps. You start tapping away and it gets louder and louder.”
Even Melbourne Storm’s biggest stars love it.
“At one of the Storm after-parties Cameron Smith told us that he loves hearing the cowbell and the chants through the game. So it’s hitting where it is supposed to be hitting.”
Spider is a huge family man. For him and his better half Amber, going to Storm matches is a massive family event.
“Storm games are great bonding for my family. It brings my family together, it brings my mates together. We go out we enjoy the game we have fun. It is real quality time.”
In this episode of Fan Love, we follow Melbourne Storm fan Spider and his “entourage” on a very special game-day against the North Queensland Cowboys. From the family BBQ in his backyard to the live action at AAMI Park, this promises to be a cracker!
