Wayne Rooney became only the second player behind Alan Shearer to score 200 Premier League goals as he scored Everton’s goal in an entertaining 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

Wayne Rooney is back!

The 31 year-old has made a great start to life back on Merseyside with two goals from the opening two Premier League matches.

Some pundits were sceptical on what Wayne Rooney would offer on his return to Everton. He has certainly started with a positive contribution to an Everton squad that has undergone significant overhaul in recent months.

What a record

The boyhood Evertonian has had a career that has to be admired. A career littered with both individual and team success.

The striker is the all time leading scorer at Manchester United. And the all time leading scorer for the England national team.

Wayne Rooney left Manchester United with a host of trophies won during his tenure. This included being a 5 x Premier League title winner, FA Cup winner, Europa League winner and the ultimate success the 2007-8 Champions League.

Last season the Manchester United Captain was relegated from being as regular team member to part-time player under Jose Mourinho.

Wanting to play more regular first-team football, the return to Everton on a free transfer certainly had the potential of a fairy tale reunion.

An England recall?

While the 31 year-old is firmly focused on Everton, a return to the England team is not out of the question as evidenced by his comments after the City game.

“We’ll see. I’m focused on Everton. I’m sure I’ll speak to Gareth Southgate (England manager) over the next few days and we’ll have a conversation and see what happens.”

A return to the international stage may be unlikely with the Champion in the twilight of his career. But Wayne Rooney has shown right now he is fit and committed. And most importantly still has the smarts and a touch of magic to score goals.
