Serena Fires Back at McEnroe

Tennis superstar Serena Williams has responded to former champion John McEnroe who attacked her tennis credentials overnight.

Serena Williams would be like 700 in the world

In a chat with US radio station NPR, McEnroe strangely went on the attack against Serena suggesting she wouldn’t cut it on the men’s tour.

“If she played the men’s circuit she’d be, like, 700 in the world.”

“That doesn’t mean I don’t think Serena is an incredible player, and I suppose anything’s possible; maybe at some point a women’s tennis player can be better than anybody.”

“I just haven’t seen that in any other sport, and I haven’t seen it in tennis. If she had to just play the men’s circuit, it would be an entirely different story.”

Serena wasted no time responding to McEnroe’s slightly bizarre comments with some sharp posts on Twitter.

To attack Serena’s tennis credentials the way the Mac has, just doesn’t make sense.

Serena’s been one of the greatest players of all time and is only one major away from Margaret Court’s record of 24 majors.

Serena’s majors have all come in the open era too. So you could argue they carry more weight than those that Court won.

On top of that Williams won the Australian Open whilst pregnant which is a bloody unbelievable achievement.

Whilst what McEnroe is saying might well be true, comparing Serena to the men seems like a pointless comparison. It’s the equivalent of saying an AFLW player wouldn’t get a kick against the blokes.

I am a big fan of McEnroe but this was not his best work.
