A 59-point victory over the Saints on Monday night has the Cats sitting third and well placed for a tilt at the 2020 Premiership. It was an impressive performance with Sam Menegola arguably best on ground as he collected 26 disposals and kicked two goals.
The Cats midfielder has had a brilliant season thus far. But perhaps he has flown under the radar of some of his more high-profile teammates.
Vince praises Menegola
Calling the game for Triple M radio, former player Bernie Vince was full of praise for Menegola and advocated the midfielder should be in consideration for All-Australian honours if his form continues.
“Is he in All-Australian form Menegola? Every time I call a Geelong game he dominates. He sort of goes under the radar but he finds a heap of the footy, hits the scoreboard, sets a lot of things up. No one ever talks about him.”
The stats support the claim
Menegola has played every game so far in the 2020 season averaging 21.4 disposals per match.
Not just winning the ball but showing his ability to hit the scoreboard. He’s kicking at least a goal in 7 of 11 games (10 in total).
The 2020 league rankings have the 28-year-old ranked in the top 15 for total disposals, uncontested possessions, marks, and metres gained.
The midfielder leads many key performance indicators at the Cats, and it would not be unreasonable to suggest the Western Australian is most likely leading the Geelong Best & Fairest right now.
A massive test awaits the Cats this Friday with a clash against the top of the table Port Adelaide.
Another strong performance from Sam Menegola against the ladder leaders and All-Australian discussions do not seem all that far-fetched for the underrated Cat.
