Garry Lyon leaves Channel 9 after more than two decades at the station.
The former Melbourne captain announced he will be joining the team at Fox Sports to take up a commentary role.
Garry Lyon leaves Channel 9
I think this is a good move on Lyon’s behalf. He has plenty of knockers (often for things that have happened away from the field) but I feel some of his footy analysis is brilliant.
Some of the boundary riders and “expert commentators” Channel 7 and Fox Sports have acquired in recent years have been fairly average in my opinion so it will be great to see someone with Lyon’s experience getting amongst the real stuff.
In many ways Lyon seemed wasted at Channel 9 where this year he only really appeared on Footy Classified late on a Monday night.
A big week
It is the second big announcement in two days with fellow Footy Classified host Caroline Wilson yesterday announcing that she will be stepping down from her role as chief football writer at The Age.
Back to basics for Lyon
Lyon told News Limited that he was looking forward to a new challenge.
“You don’t make those decisions lightly,” Lyon told News Ltd.
“I’ve had such a great time there (at Channel 9) and they’ve been good to me and gave me the opportunity straight out of playing.
“To call footy on telly again is something that turned the whole decision and my thinking anyway.
“Calling televised games is the highlight from a footy commentary point of view.
“Probably the most fun I’ve had in the media was when Channel 9 did have the footy for that five year period and I loved every minute of that. I always hoped that somewhere down the track I’d get another crack at it. That hasn’t eventuated obviously, so this opportunity arose and there was a chance to do that.”
