Joe Daniher exercised his free agency rights at the end of the 2020 season when he joined the Brisbane Lions on a three year-deal. The 26-year-old seeking a fresh start after eight years at Essendon.

The former Bomber has settled well at his new club. Daniher has not missed a training session and impressed in the intra club trial last month kicking four goals.

“He demonstrated his great capacity to play the game. He’s a natural footballer, plays with instinct and intelligence and that all showed out the other night.”

The new Lion was also one of many positives for Brisbane in the practice game against Gold Coast last Saturday at Metricon stadium, booting another four goals as the Lions ran out 47-point victors.

In isolation it might not sound like a big deal. But it is important preparation for the key forward who will be looking to put his injury woes behind him and feature in a round one fixture for the first time since 2018.

No pressure on Daniher

Injury has restricted Joe Daniher to 15 games in the last three seasons, but his talent cannot be questioned. A great mark and booming kick that will compliment Eric Hipwood is something that will excite the Brisbane faithful.

Lions Legend Jonathan Brown a firm believer the Lions are in the Premiership window and Joe Daniher has a significant role to play.

“I had concerns whether they could win it until they got a bona fide All-Australian experienced key forward there. Now they’ve got that, it’s just a matter of him staying healthy and he can contribute. It was their most pressing need — a big focal point there to kick goals.”

The 2017 season remains the most productive season of Daniher’s career to date when he kicked 65 goals from 23 matches.

Time will tell if the 26 year-old can get back to those lofty heights when he was a Best &Fairest and All-Australian.

Similar output and you suspect the Lions are well placed to go a step further than last year’s Preliminary Final.
